Space Traveler Discloses Emotional Distress Following Deluge of Backlash After Historic Trip

A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her struggle with mental health after being subjected to a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the brief journey to space in April, which also featured well-known figures.

The mission was met with derision by some, who questioned its cost and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the experience, the astronaut, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction overshadowed her achievement under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a online statement, describing a supportive conversation from a mission companion in the aftermath of the flight.

She characterized the press attention and digital reaction as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she revealed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

Ms. Nguyen, who has focused her career on gynecological science and operated research during the flight, said every professional achievement – including her studies and astronaut training to the historic significance of her heritage – was overshadowed under the avalanche of gendered attacks.

She is widely recognized for her tireless campaigning protecting the rights of sexual assault survivors.

Her own aspiration for spaceflight was paused after surviving a rape during her time as a student, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

The Fog Begins to Lift

Months following achieving her goal, she noted the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she acknowledged the supporters whose messages of encouragement pulled her through. “Your support rescued me,” she wrote.

She added that despite the negativity, considerable good had come out of the mission, such as spotlight on her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.

Flight Details

The computer-piloted New Shepard rocket launched from Texas in April, carrying the six-woman crew on a brief suborbital flight that exceeded the edge of space.

The team of pioneers also included accomplished professionals from various fields.

The company behind the flight is a commercial aerospace company launched by a well-known tech mogul.
