Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.

The ex-president was sentenced of orchestrating a military coup in last fall and handed more than 27 years in jail, but he was staying under house arrest pending legal challenges.

High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" emerged.

This included attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a invitation to a demonstration that could "allow for a possible escape.

In a filing authorising the arrest, the judge said data from the unit overseeing his home detention suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the surveillance device to guarantee victory in his flight.

This, it said, would be made easier by the disorder caused by the gathering called by his child.

His child, his son Flávio, who works as a legislator, called for a gathering of his followers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on the weekend.

His son wrote on social media on last Friday: Will you battle for your nation, or see it all from your phone there on your sofa? I urge you to struggle with us."
