World Health Organization Issues Alert Over Acute Lack of Weight-Loss Jabs
Under a tenth of patients eligible to benefit from obesity jabs such as Wegovy have access to them, states the World Health Organization as it releases its initial recommendations on the drugs.
Considering more than one billion individuals worldwide currently living with obesity, it is urging increased and just availability to these injectable treatments.
According to estimates, over two billion could be obese by 2030 if no action is taken.
"Our new guidelines affirms that excess weight is a long-term condition that can be addressed with comprehensive and ongoing care," said its chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
High costs, limited production capacity, and logistical bottlenecks are major hurdles to universal availability to the jabs that can help people shift significant body mass, says the organization.
GLP-1 Therapy Supply Crisis
Even under the current most favorable case, the supply of these medications would only suffice for about 100 million people – less than 10% of eligible patients, per the health organization.
The advice urges governments and firms to expand availability, through approaches like voluntary licensing.
Exclusive production rights on a key compound – the primary component of the drug Wegovy – is set to lapse in a number of countries in 2026.
